Considerate on the road

Especially on weekends and during holiday periods, the available capacity on trains and buses may be exceeded at certain times. This may result in delays or mean that not all potential passengers can be transported immediately. We ask for your understanding and, if necessary, your patience until the next bus or train arrives. Thank you for your understanding!

Arrival by train

Public transportation is convenient and easy thanks to the well-connected train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From there, it is easy to continue your journey to Eibsee and the Zugspitze by cog railway or Eibsee bus.

Cog Railway

The Bavarian Zugspitzbahn cog railway takes you from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee in just under 30 minutes. The Zugspitze railway station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located at the western exit of the Deutsche Bahn railway station, approx. 200 meters away. The cog railway stops directly at the foot of the Zugspitze, only approx. 300 m from the shore of Lake Eibsee. It is also possible to continue on to the Zugspitze with a valid mountain railway ticket.

Cog railway timetable

The cog railway stops at the following stations between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Zugspitzplatt: Hausberg, Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau, and Eibsee. Large parking lots are available at the Hausberg and Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn stations.

Good to know: The cog railway operated by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn AG is one of the few cog railways still in operation in Germany. It runs from Zugspitzbahnhof station, located in the immediate vicinity of the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, to the Zugspitze plateau at 2,600 m. The white and blue train stops at several stations on the valley route. From Eibsee, it continues along the mountain route and through the 4,453-meter-long tunnel up to Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze.

Deutschland-Ticket (Germany Ticket)

  • The Germany Ticket is only valid on the rack railway on the downhill route between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau. A separate ticket must be purchased for the onward journey to Eibsee or the Zugspitze.
  • The Germany Ticket is not valid on cable cars.
  • The Germany Ticket does not entitle the holder to a discount on the mountain railway ticket.
  • Travel with the Germany Ticket on the cog railway is only possible if passenger numbers allow. Especially on weekends and during holidays, demand is likely to exceed the available capacity on the trains and not all passengers can be transported. We ask for your understanding that guests with a valid mountain railway ticket have priority when traveling on the cog railway.
